The Story Behind My Favorite Custom Dining Table

Every custom piece I build has a story. It carries the voice of the wood, the design choices, and the aspirations of its future home. But there’s one dining table commission in Ottawa that still warms my heart—because it was about more than just timber and joinery. It was about people, space, and connection.

Here’s the story behind one of my favorite projects.

First Contact: A Vision Takes Shape

The process began with a message. The clients told me about their new dining room, the amount of natural light, how many people they’d like to seat, and the ambiance they envisioned: warm, organic, grounded, inviting. They had pictures of table styles they liked—some leaning toward live edge, others toward clean silhouettes. But what struck me was how much thought they’d already put into the space.

I invited them to come by the shop, to walk through slab options, feel textures, and let us talk through what would truly serve their family and their home. That first meeting always sets the tone.

Choosing the Slab: Personality First

As we reviewed several slabs, one piece caught their eye. It had movement in its grain, with a bold heartwood band and a knot cluster that, to them, looked like the rings of a tree’s lifetime. The live edge edges were interesting but not overpowering.

We leaned into that slab’s character: allowing its features to guide some of the design decisions rather than forcing it into a rigid template. Its natural story became part of the table’s future.

Design, Structure, and Compromise

We discussed size, overhangs, and how many seats around the table. We looked at potential leg styles. They loved a modern leg profile but also wanted a sense of solidity. In conversations we landed on a base that’s minimal but strong, allowing the slab to take center stage.

We refined edge profile options, determined where we might need reinforcement, and agreed on how much live edge to preserve vs. when to smooth edges for usability.

Building, Refining & Finishing

In the shop, I spent time assessing the slab for internal cracks, movement potential, and moisture stability. Repairs and reinforcements were mapped out carefully. I shaped, flattened, and smoothed, always mindful of retaining the slab’s soul.

Then came the finish, a hand‐rubbed oil treatment that deepened the wood’s tones and accentuated the grain contrast without hiding it. The process took patience. Several rounds of refining, light sanding, and review.

When the table was ready, we delivered it to their home. I remember standing in that dining room, seeing how the light hit the surface, how shadows traced the grain lines, how the family gathered around it.

Meeting the Client

When I first met Sarah and Mark, a young couple in Ottawa, they wanted something special—a table that would be the centerpiece of family dinners, game nights, and holiday celebrations. They were drawn to live edge dining tables in Kingston for their organic beauty, but they also wanted a piece that could handle everyday life with kids, pets, and lots of laughter.

Selecting the Perfect Wood

We explored several options, from rich walnut slabs to lighter maple. Together, we found a piece of maple with beautiful natural curves and a few knots that would become character marks in the final table. I remember the excitement in their eyes when we saw the live edge, it was the start of something special.

Crafting the Table

Creating the table was a labor of love. I carefully measured, cut, and joined the wood to highlight its natural beauty while ensuring durability. Every joint, every sanded edge, and every coat of finish was a step toward bringing their vision to life. What made this table so memorable was seeing how much thought Sarah and Mark put into it—they truly saw the furniture as part of their family story.

The Reveal

The day I delivered the table was unforgettable. Seeing it in their home, perfectly fitting their space, and watching their children marvel at the smooth edges and polished surface, it was a moment of pure satisfaction. The table wasn’t just furniture; it was the heart of their home, ready to hold countless memories.

Why I Love Custom Tables

Stories like this are why I do what I do. A custom wood table in Montreal or Ottawa isn’t just about function, it’s about creating a piece of art that becomes part of someone’s life. Every scratch, stain, and mark over the years will carry the memories of laughter, meals, and milestones. That’s the magic of custom furniture.
